The EduMinions' Classroom Economy

6/2/2017

Division 6 parents may have heard a lot from their kids about "getting paid" to go to school this week. We are starting a classroom economy for the month of June so students can learn about financial literacy by actually taking part in it! This blog post will outline some of the economic structures that will exist in our classroom this month.

Base Pay, Weekly Pay, and Bonuses

Each student will be "paid" $100/week every Friday. They start with $25 of base pay to get them going in our economy. They can earn money by doing daily classroom jobs, completing work during Daily 5 and Math, and even by being a good citizen of the classroom!

Rentals, Community Fees, & Fines

Students will need to pay "rent" for their desks and chairs along with a weekly community fee. They will have to pay rent on Wednesdays. Fines that are logged throughout the week will also be paid on that day. You can also be fined for not completing your "have-to-do" jobs from the teacher in Daily 5 and Math (note: these tasks are a reasonable expectation for them to complete in a single week. They create a list above and beyond these "have-to-dos" and will not be penalized for those extra tasks).

Purchases, Entrepreneurship, and Special Team Purchases

Students can purchase items from the "store" which will be open every Friday, where stickers, bookmarks, pencils, erasers, and other prizes will be available. Purchase prices vary depending on items. Students may create their own entrepreneurial idea at home in order to make more money in the classroom. Their idea must be created by them (I.e. they can't just bring in their Pokemon cards to sell) and must be approved by me before sales can occur.

Special team purchases are a way for the group to reach a common goal. These include buying a pyjama day, buying an early recess, or buying out an afternoon for a popcorn party and movie. Prices are set to be attainable but not overly easy to achieve, either. Students will need to pay equally into a pot in order to achieve a special team purchase.

As the economy grows and bank and store lines are busy, some new jobs are emerging. Stay tuned on your child's blog as they may be working some job applications. Positions may include but are not limited to:
  • banker's assistants
  • store managers & clerks
  • custodial staff
The kids will help me come up with the rest!
