Hi families of Div 2, Below you can find a video update about what's going on this week as well as a link to our "week-at-a-glance." This is a SAMPLE since we are not yet starting official instruction but we will use this same spreadsheet for the weeks to come, so keep an eye on it! In the meantime, try to get a daily routine going with your family and you can follow this guide to try to integrate learning opportunities. Quick notes from video:
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need support. Be well, - Mrs. LS Hi Division 2 families, Over the next couple of days, my hope is to have spoken with each and every one of you to see how you're doing and if you have any needs during this time. The staff at Dorothy Peacock is working hard on planning and preparing for your continuity of learning during this challenging time. We will have more details in the coming days on what this might look like. In the meantime, there are some things I would like to recommend practicing at home until we officially begin remote instruction: 1. Create a daily routine.Aim to start building a consistent schedule for your weekdays. Wake up at the same time in the morning, have breakfast, and spend time with family (if possible). Students should expect to check in on Microsoft Teams by 10AM each day and then start some type of learning or practice task afterward. Keeping a consistent schedule of events creates predictability and eases anxiety. Some suggestions for items on this rough schedule are listed below: 2. Reading Practice - 30 min per dayMany of you have already expressed how often you're reading right now. It's a perfect time for this! Aim to read for about 30 minutes each day. If access to new and exciting books is an issue, I have sent out home access to Epic. Please have your parent sign up for a home account with the link provided in the email (email was sent on Mar 31). 3. Journaling - 15-30 min per dayThis is a very strange time for all of us. Our lives have been disrupted and all the people we love spending time with are now far away. Write down your thoughts, emotions, activities each day and keep track of how you're doing. Journaling doesn't always mean writing paragraphs either. You can also sketchnote, draw, or create comics about your experience. 4. Mathletics - 15-30 min per dayHead to Mathletics, sign in, and explore. Do you have old tasks you could improve on? Do you have tasks you're wondering about that you'd like to try? Put in some practice so that it's not shocking when we get back to our regular math units in a week or two. 5. Spelling City - 15 min per dayDownload the SpellingCity app on your tablet or head to the website on your computer. Sign in using your Microsoft username and password WITHOUT the @langleyschools.ca at the end. A sample username/password might be: Username: vlindgrenstreicher#### Password: vi####$$ Practice some games on your old lists to keep up your word knowledge. 6. Get Outside - 45 min-1 hour per dayMake sure you're carving out some time every day to get outdoors for a walk, bike ride, or whatever mode of transportation allows you to maintain proper physical distance from others. Do this ESPECIALLY when the sun is shining. It's good for your mental and physical health. 7. Observe: What Learning are you Already Doing? We learn things every day. This situation is rich with opportunity to take advantage of learning in the home... you just need to look for it. Try a new recipe, learn a new skill on YouTube (I learned how to crochet from YouTube videos!), create a dance, make a tutorial video, write a story. Observe and consider how you are already learning when you create something new! In the coming days, I'll be communicating with more information regarding our learning plan. You can always send me a message on Teams if you have ideas or questions about what's going on with our class. In the meantime, be safe, wash your hands, and make the best of this!
-Mrs. LS This is the weirdest "welcome back to school" you and I will probably ever have... I will be in touch with all of you sometime this week. I sincerely hope you are all well. Things to view, read, or download:
Take care of yourselves. - Mrs. LS Dear families of Division 2,
Today the Grade 8 WGSS counsellor, Andrea Ruffo, and Vice Principal, Mr. Sean Juteau came to talk to us about course selection and planning for the transition into Grade 8... and HIGH SCHOOL! They shared quite a bit of information with us including which courses students must select as well as elective choices. Your child will be bringing home some forms that you will need to go through together, including a course selection form that needs to be completed on paper AND online through MyEdBC by no later than Tuesday, February 25. There are several deadlines for the specialized program applications and challenge exams as well - they are detailed in the packet your child is bringing home. The Grade 7 teaching team has requested that any programs that require a teacher recommendation (particularly the Math 8 challenge exam and the English Honours challenge exam) be given to us to fill out by no later than Friday, February 21. Unfortunately for us, the deadline for these forms falls directly at the same time that we are writing Term 2 report cards, so we need additional time to complete these and appreciate your understanding in advance. Additionally, I will added some links below that have access to back-up forms in case any get lost along the way. For kids who are having conflicting feelings about which programs to apply for, we have encouraged them to apply for any and all programs that they're interested in to keep their options open, then make a decision later based on what they gain entry to, or don't. We appreciate your support as we begin to navigate this transition! :) On Wednesday, we attended a field trip at Makercube and it was super duper fun! We got to make a light up acrylic sign with a wooden sand, almost completely from scratch. Here are the cool skills we got to try a hand at: • laser etching a design onto an acrylic tile and sandblasting it • measuring, cutting, and sanding a wooden base for the project • soldering an upcycled USB cord to an LED strip • assembling pieces for a cool final product! A huge thank you goes to our parent volunteers: Daryl, Lynda, Ashley, Jenn, and Jonathan! We couldn't have done it without your help. We also took WAYYYY too many photos, so I have added them in a slideshow below. Enjoy!
Hi parents of Division 2, This week, students will be completing the Foundation Skills Assessment for Grade 7s. We will be moving through the series of reading, writing, and numeracy portions so that we can complete the assessment in its entirety. As a result, most of our normal academic work will be put on hold. There will be no spelling and vocab list coming home this week (except for students who have been exempted from taking the assessment). Please encourage time to play and relax at home this week in light of the hard work that will be put into completing the FSA. If your child is going to be absent this week for any reason, please email me so that I can set aside another time for them to complete the portions that they miss. We will also be participating in Student Vote on Friday morning, where students get to "share their voice" in choosing the next federal government. While their votes don't count toward the actual election, it is an educational opportunity to learn about governance, societal issues (I.e. climate change, pipeline projects, the economy, etc), and how elections work. This week, we will be digging into the belief systems behind the parties more closely so that students can make their own informed decision about which party they want to support with their vote. If you're looking for more info on how this is being facilitated, check out the amazing Student Vote website by Civix and some of the adapted activities on our very own Social Studies page. Hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know. Thanks, Victoria Hello parents and students of Div 2, We have sent home our first Scholastic Order this weekend! By ordering books from our monthly orders, you are directly supporting our classroom. Every sale gives us class "bonus bucks" which we can use to buy new materials and supplies for our classroom. This year's group is very keen on improving the ambience of the classroom with these bonus bucks. You can order in two ways: by sending in your paper order form to Mrs. LS with cash or cheque (cheques made out to Scholastic Canada) OR you can head to www.scholastic.ca/canadaclubs to place your order online. You will need to make an account and link your account to me as a teacher, and then you're ready to go. Full instructions to do that are detailed in the downloadable file to the below.
Thanks in advance for any support you are able to provide! As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
- Mrs. LS Hello parents & guardians,
Welcome to our class blog and website! Please bookmark this page as it will be a valuable communication tool throughout this year. I will be posting everything from classroom happenings to weekly reminders and so much more! My goal is to safely integrate digital communications tools to make the home-school relationship as seamless as possible. Students will be learning to use tools effectively and appropriately with mindful digital citizenship at the forefront of their learning. We will be using several web-based learning options other than this site in our class this year. There will also be several ways to communicate and connect with our class, and to keep up with what we’re doing each day. Feel free to click the social media buttons at the top of this page to explore our EduMinions social media profiles and pages. Be sure to follow and like our pages on the social media you use most in order to keep up with what is going on in Division 2! After following or liking our various social media accounts, it would be very helpful for you to fill out this short survey about your child. It will help me to get to know them better and get us off to a great start to the school year! I am looking forward to connecting, working, and learning with each of you! -Mrs. LS |
