Literature Circles - Close Reading

January 20, 2020
Close reading is an indepth interpretation of a text. This week, we're going to read one more passage and discuss it with a team to get a feel for what literature circles will really be like when we start our novels. This week, we will read the short story called "7th Grade" by Gary Soto (embedded below) and complete a close reading overview page which will help us to prepare for our literature circle on Thursday with a new team.

Introduction to Global Read Aloud & Front Desk

September 30th was the official kick-off for the Global Read Aloud project and we will be reading a novel called Front Desk by Kelly Yang. The story features a young Chinese girl named Mia whose family has immigrated to the United States. We will be learning all about their adventures as they run a motel owned by a not-so-friendly boss, as they fight to save money, and as they face racism and stereotyping from different members of their community. As we read Front Desk, we will be connecting with other classes both in our school and around the globe to discuss the themes of perseverance and integrity from this powerful story.
