On this page, you will find important dates, events, and what is being covered in the classroom. Directly below is an overview of what we're learning about this month as well as a calendar of events for the month.

February - This month we are working on...

Maintaining the classroom environment:
  • Consistent reinforcement of routines, leadership, responsibility, & expectations including classroom job roles
  • ​Community engagement through social responsibility, building emotional intelligence, and peer support systems

Special Grade 7 Projects, Trips, etc:
  • WGSS vistors - Mrs. Ruffo and Mr. Juteau visit to discuss timetabling and Grade 8 courses
  • Respect & Diversity Week - Feb 21-24

Literature circles, language arts, and literacy instruction:
  • Literature Circles begin - spanning until Spring Break. This includes:
    • Reading and analysis of selected novel for literature circle work
    • Weekly topical group discussions with literature circle teams
    • Self and group assessment of literature circle work
  • Reading Goal 3 begins
  • Continuation of personal reading conferences and reading accountability
  • Writing explorations and Writer's Workshop - selecting pieces from our "Writing Tour" to reflect on, revise, and share with others
  • Continued personalized small group instruction for spelling, vocabulary, and word work, including a re-assessment to measure growth
  • Continuing extension activities through Daily 5 literacy instruction - autonomy in carrying out literacy tasks

Mathematics:
  • Fraction, decimal, percentage conversions
  • Percentage explorations including financial literacy touch-points 
  • Continued fact fluency practice with multiplication and division (automaticity up to 10x10)
  • Geometric volume (Burrus)
  • Continuation of Guided Math stations and routines 

French:
  • French-speaking country project

Career Education:
  • Continued linking of Core Competencies to our daily life
  • Core Competency reflection and mid-term Student-Inclusive Conference goal check-in 

Applied Design, Skills, & Technology:
  • Completing digital storytelling mini-projects (currently completing stop-motion animation)
  • Exploring Pixar's Rules for Storytelling
  • Digital Storytelling unit final project

​Social Emotional Development: 
  • Continued daily MindUP practice - self-regulation to be calm, alert, and focused
  • Spirit Buddies - daily peer group meetings to build community external of our friend groups
  • ​Continued leadership skills through class jobs such as Student Lead​
