News from Mrs. LS's Room...

On this page, you will find important dates, events, and what is being covered in the classroom. Directly below is an overview of what we're learning about this month as well as a calendar of events for the month.

January - This month we are working on...

Maintaining the classroom environment: 
  • Consistent reinforcement of routines, leadership, responsibility, & expectations (including new Health & Safety expectations)
  • Community engagement through social responsibility, building emotional intelligence, and peer support systems
  • Student-driven governance: Systemic rules & regulations created through weekly Class Meetings 

Special Grade 7 Projects, Trips, etc:
  • Grade 7 hoodies arrived in December but you may still order them here

Literature circles, language arts, and literacy instruction:
  • Continued personalized small group instruction for spelling, vocabulary, and word work
  • Continuation of personalized reading conferences (one-on-one support meetings with Mrs. LS) and working toward Term 2A reading goals (two reading goal periods slated for Term 2)
  • Building criteria and expectations for literature circle work
  • Continuing activities through Daily 5 literacy instruction - autonomy in carrying out literacy tasks
  • Close reading, persuasive writing, journaling

Mathematics:
  • Continuation of Guided Math stations and routines 
  • Representing percentages; percentages in context
  • Converting percentages to decimals and fractions
  • Introduction to integers
  • Continued review: multiplication and division fluency and facts

Social Studies:
  • Continued Social Studies skills and processes exploration
  • Evidence, cause & consequence, ethical judgment

Science:​
  • Introduction to electricity and electromagnetism
  • Pathway of electricity; electromagnetism explorations

Physical and Health Education:
  • Begin basketball unit
  • Ball-handling; shooting, passing, and dribbling fundamentals
  • Defense and gameplay

French:
  • Re-introduction to basic vocabulary and phrases
  • Exploring ways to state preferences, likes, and dislikes with simple reasoning

Career Education:
  • Review Core Competency goal-setting: tracking goal progress
  • Continued focus on leadership and respectful, inclusive, and ethical workplace behaviours

Art:
  • N/A

Applied Design, Skills, & Technology:
  • Learning artifact creation (video, slides, documents)

​Social Emotional Development: 
  • Daily MindUP practice - self-regulation to be calm, alert, and focused
  • Creating rules and regulations in the classroom that are fair and just through student governance in Class Meeting
  • Talking circles and Spirit Buddies - practice of sharing and listening to responses of critical classroom questions, connection with non-preferred peers
  • Developing leadership skills through class jobs such as Student Lead
