Book Bracket Bye Voting
A "bye" in a tournament is when a team gets to advance to the next round without playing anyone in the first round.
Because we have 24 books in our bracket, we will have 8 books that automatically get a bye into round 2. Based on which books you're most interested in, you get to vote on which ones!

Media Studies: Clickbait and Catchy Hooks
Content creators - whether indy or corporate - are all vying for your clicks, and they'll do just about anything to get them. Astonishing headlines and attention-grabbing starts to videos have become commonplace in our online worlds. Let's discuss what goes into creating "clickbait," what creators get out of it, and the impact on the audience (... us).
The Homophone Animation Project - LA x ADST
Now that we've broken down a number of homophones in Language Arts AND we've learned how to animate objects on a slide using Keynote, we're going to smash together our skills to complete The Homophone Project!
With a partner, you are going to select a homophone pair and create animations using Keynote to show each word's meaning. The final product will need to be submitted in video format and should be no more than 30s in length. Mrs. LS will support you in exporting your final slides as a video.
Watch the animation below to see a (polished) example of what is being asked of you:

Media Studies: The Influence of Algorithms
Algorithms are a series of instructions designed to solve a problem. The algorithms on social media decide what you're going to see, and in what order. They do this by collecting and using your data, identifying your likes and preferences to decide what to serve you up next. Everything from what you view, to how long you view it, to what you tap, to whether you engage or not with likes or comments - data points exist in literally every action you take (or don't take) when using social media.
Algorithms are developed for different reasons - to keep you using their service now, to getting you to come back tomorrow, or to serve you up ads that might actually get you to buy something, to name a few. If we're not careful and thoughtful users of social media, algorithms can begin to shape our worldviews.
This lesson is designed to get you to think critically about the effect of algorithms on your media consumption habits.

Glossary of Terms for KQED Algorithm Video
Machine learning (n.) - the process by which a computer is able to improve its own performance by continuously incorporating new data into an existing mathematical model
When you continuously like and share cat videos on Tik Tok, the social media app uses machine learning to gather data about what you are doing to add that to your recommendation algorithm so you can keep being shown cat videos and stay on the app longer.
Revenue (n.) - money that is made by or paid to a business or organization
Social media companies make revenue by showing you ads and collecting data about you when you are using their apps.
Agency (n.) - a person or thing through which power is used or something is achieved
As someone who uses Instagram on a daily basis, I have the agency to help the algorithm curate what I see on my feed by pressing ‘like’ on the type of content that I want.
Radicalization (n.) - to make someone radical (people who favor rapid and sweeping extreme changes in laws and government)
Radicalization can happen when we are shown only one type of extreme political point of view on my social media feeds because the algorithm has created a filter bubble that only shows me content that shares my views.
Intentional (adj.) - done in a deliberate way, not accidental
We need to be intentional about our social media use and make sure we are aware of the pitfalls that recommended algorithms create with the content we consume.

20 Cool Things About Water Infographic
Division 1 is embarking on their first-term read-aloud - Thirst by Varsha Bajaj. This story is featured as the middle grades book in the Global Read Aloud, with thousands of classrooms all over the world studying and connecting over the same novel.
Thirst is a story about a young girl named Minni who lives in the poorest part of Mumbai, India, where water is a precious commodity. Shortages are rampant and their access is under threat because of thieves who try to steal and sell the clean water for profit. Meanwhile, Minni begins working in a fancy high-rise building as a maid and learns that water flows freely from every tap, and there is even a swimming pool on the rooftop! One day, she comes face-to-face with one of the water mafia bosses and must decide if she should risk her job - or her life - to expose him. |
