We have been busy practicing our speeches today in class. We will be practicing tomorrow as well in preparation for our in class presentation on Monday. Students are being asked to practice this weekend at home as well. Happy speaking!

Today we will be embarking on the journey that is public speaking! In class we have been working on writing paragraphs using the Hamburger Method: Each of the students will be expected to write a speech containing at least 3 paragraphs. When spoken aloud, the speech should range from approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute. The speech can be on a topic of the student's choice and must be supported by personal stories or research.
This project will be included in this term's assessments for developing written skills and will be worked on both in class and at home. I am kindly requesting that when providing support at home, your child is the one conducting the actual research and writing. You can guide them to possibilities in their writing without telling them answers. This will foster their growth in Language Arts as they critically think about writing and communicating with an audience. Remember, humour and fun is absolutely allowed! Students can create cue cards to help them on the day of the speeches. Our class speech event will take place on February 3rd in class. From there, 2-3 students will be selected to speak at either the schools' primary or intermediate public speaking assembly on February 7th. All students will be entering their speeches on our KidBlog site after the event is over to add to their digital portfolios for the year. Please feel free to visit and leave commentary for your child -- it means the world to them! Let me know if you have any questions about speech-writing or Google Docs where we will be writing our speeches. -Ms. Olson |
