A Note from Mrs. LS...

Dear parents of Div 2,

I am writing to inform you that my doctor has asked me to be on a medical leave a bit earlier than I had intended. My last day before I left on maternity leave was supposed to be this Friday, March 16... so I was very close... but not quite there!

I will still be coming in for about an hour for the class party on Friday to say goodbye to your amazing and incredible kids. I should be around from about 10:45-noon or so. Mr. Oliver has planned a movie afternoon so we will have our food and "party" in the morning instead. If you volunteered your child to bring something, please do send it 😃

This also means I will not be in attendance at conferences; however, I encourage you to still plan to come with your child if you have signed up to do so. For the last 2 weeks, our Div 2 students have been preparing for a student-led conference experience that should give you an excellent snapshot of their progress in term 2. I got very positive feedback from this set-up last year (and I welcome any additional feedback this year as well). After the conference, you are of course welcome to email me with any questions you may have regarding your child's progress. My intention is not to leave you hanging, so please do not hesitate to ask!

While I am sad to be torn away from this talented and thoughtful group of students a bit early, I am excited to begin my journey with my own child. Thank you to all of you for your kind thoughts, words, and support as I've begun this transition with my family. Your children will always be part of my first Grade 6 class and I will never forget them, or you.

Best wishes to everyone,
Victoria (Mrs. LS)

Term End Celebration & Goodbye to Mrs. LS

3/1/2018

Dear parents of Division 2,

On Friday, March 16, Division 2 will be having a class luncheon and term end celebration in the afternoon. The party will start during the eating period (12:15pm) and we will hang out and have an afternoon of gameplay and socializing, so I (Mrs. LS) have a chance to say a proper goodbye to everyone.

We will have some Grade 7s fill in for the monitors who are supposed to be in primary classrooms during that time, so our kids get a break and can attend the party.

It would be appreciated if parents and students could bring in some food to “cater” our party. We’re looking for predominantly healthy food items, and we have 29 bellies to fill with some allergies to keep in mind (primarily, no nuts and no seafood/fish products).

If you are able, please sign up next to one or more of the items on this Google Doc. It is first come, first serve for selections, and if you have a suggestion for something different than what's on the list, feel free to add it at the bottom! :) If you are unable to add to the document yourself, please view it and email me your selection and I'll add it for you as soon as I'm able to check your message.

Thank you for your support of our class community, as always! I will definitely miss this amazing class when I'm gone.

Dear parents of Division 2,

On Thursday, December 21st, Division 2 will be having a class luncheon and term end celebration in the afternoon. The party will start during the eating period (12:15pm) and we will watch a movie in the afternoon (movie title TBA).

Hi parents of Division 2,

This week, we put up our very first public posts on Kidblog! Be sure to find your child's post from today and leave them a comment! If you don't see your comment right away, don't panic - I need to approve all comments before they publicly appear on the blog. This is keep your child safe and to ensure that all incoming comments are appropriate.

If you can't find your child's post, they may have set their post visibility to "Classmates Only," in which case you'll have to get them to sign in so you can read it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Playing with Padlet

We are now 6 chapters into our Global Read Aloud book: A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This book explores the stories of two young Sudanese children living in different time periods and their experiences in this impoverished, war-stricken country.

Below, we are combining digital literacy and digital citizenship with our exploration of the book as students answer questions using a web tool called Padlet. Padlet is like a cork board where students can share their thoughts and responses and peruse through the responses of others to aid in their learning. Check out your child's responses below - they should have thoughtfully answered at least 2 questions in the class time that they were given.

Note: As we learn about digital citizenship and etiquette - that is, how we act and interact in online spaces - we will all make mistakes. Your child's work may have typos, may be silly, or might be missing all together! If that is the case, you can have them click here to submit a new response on our Padlet wall from home.

Welcome to Division 2!

Hello parents & guardians,

Welcome to our class blog and website! Please bookmark this page as it will be a valuable communication tool throughout this year. We will be posting everything from classroom happenings to weekly reminders and so much more!

My goal is to safely integrate digital communications tools to make the home-school relationship as seamless as possible. Students will be learning to use tools effectively and appropriately with mindful digital citizenship at the forefront of their learning.

We will be using several web-based learning options other than this site in our class this year. Not savvy with digital tools? Not to worry! On the class blog, I will be posting some "how-to" videos and informational articles on what you need to do to stay connected with our class!

Until then, there are several ways to communicate and connect with our class. Feel free to click the social media buttons at the top of this page to explore our EduMinions social media profiles and pages.

After following or liking our various social media accounts, it would be very helpful for you to fill out this short survey about your child. It will help me to get to know them better and get us off to a great start to the school year!

If you're looking for our first newsletter that came home, it can be found below.

I am looking forward to connecting, working, and learning with each of you!

The EduMinions' Classroom Economy

6/2/2017

Division 6 parents may have heard a lot from their kids about "getting paid" to go to school this week. We are starting a classroom economy for the month of June so students can learn about financial literacy by actually taking part in it! This blog post will outline some of the economic structures that will exist in our classroom this month.

Base Pay, Weekly Pay, and Bonuses

Each student will be "paid" $100/week every Friday. They start with $25 of base pay to get them going in our economy. They can earn money by doing daily classroom jobs, completing work during Daily 5 and Math, and even by being a good citizen of the classroom!

Rentals, Community Fees, & Fines

Students will need to pay "rent" for their desks and chairs along with a weekly community fee. They will have to pay rent on Wednesdays. Fines that are logged throughout the week will also be paid on that day. You can also be fined for not completing your "have-to-do" jobs from the teacher in Daily 5 and Math (note: these tasks are a reasonable expectation for them to complete in a single week. They create a list above and beyond these "have-to-dos" and will not be penalized for those extra tasks).

Purchases, Entrepreneurship, and Special Team Purchases

Students can purchase items from the "store" which will be open every Friday, where stickers, bookmarks, pencils, erasers, and other prizes will be available. Purchase prices vary depending on items. Students may create their own entrepreneurial idea at home in order to make more money in the classroom. Their idea must be created by them (I.e. they can't just bring in their Pokemon cards to sell) and must be approved by me before sales can occur.

Special team purchases are a way for the group to reach a common goal. These include buying a pyjama day, buying an early recess, or buying out an afternoon for a popcorn party and movie. Prices are set to be attainable but not overly easy to achieve, either. Students will need to pay equally into a pot in order to achieve a special team purchase.

As the economy grows and bank and store lines are busy, some new jobs are emerging. Stay tuned on your child's blog as they may be working some job applications. Positions may include but are not limited to:
  • banker's assistants
  • store managers & clerks
  • custodial staff
The kids will help me come up with the rest!

Any Questions?

Be sure to contact me if you have any questions or curiosities at all!
