A month of Poetry and Discovery!

This month has been filled with two exciting topics: poetry and Aboriginal Education.

As we started learning about poetry, we learned that it's everywhere! Not only do we see poetry written down on paper, but also in song lyrics, signs around town, and even exaggerations like "It's as hot as the sun outside!" It's been fun getting the students to write their own poems and seeing their creative sides! I have loved reading each and every one of them!

We have also learned a lot about different Aboriginal cultures in Canada, and how early European contact affected many of these communities. The students took part in a Blanket Exercise with a special guest, where they went through different events like the spreading of disease, residential schools, and land conflicts. I was so proud to see all the students behaving respectfully, and feeling comfortable to share their feelings about the history of Canada, and/or maybe emotions that were brought out because of this presentation.

Continuing with Aboriginal education, the students were given some time to investigate different artifacts from the Sto:lo commuity, like traditional cooking and hunting supplies, and a map of the traditional Sto:lo territory, which Langley is a part of. It was a great springboard activity for the students to take part in before they started their own research.

This week, the students started their project on different Aboriginal communities in Canada. Many students are creating dioramas and art pieces to represent transportation, clothing, food, hunting, location, tools, and housing of traditional communities' way of life. I'm really excited to see the final products; they're all looking great so far!

As always, it's been a great time with the EduMinions.
